Devils End 13-Game Skid Against Fords to Begin 2024

HAVERFORD, Pa. - Junior guard Clair Marion dropped 24 points, while Caitlin Blackman and Mia Chapman each posted double-digits as well as the Dickinson women's basketball team began 2024 with a solid 71-51 conference win over the host Haverford College on Saturday afternoon at Gooding Area. The win snapped a 13-game losing streak to the Fords as the Red and White had not claimed a victory over HC since February 24, 2016 a 44-26 victory in Carlisle.

A triple by Clair Marion and jumper for Mia Chapman accounted for the Dickinson offense early, while at the other end the duo of Erin Albright and Ally Landau gave the home side a 6-5 edge with three minutes gone. The Red and White then went on a rampage as the group of Caitlin Blackman, Lindsey Hollenshead, Chapman and Marion racked up twelve straight points to grab a 17-6 lead at the 7:11 mark. Haverford answered back with a 6-0 march on buckets for Gia Flamini and Albright to cut the margin to just 17-12. However, Jenna Weinstein and Blackman tallied four of the final seven points in the period for a 21-15 advantage through ten minutes.

After a layup by Weinstein, it became the "Audrey Jakway Show" as she scored eight of the ensuing ten points to close Haverford within 25-23 with not even two minutes gone. The Red and White continued to keep the Fords at bay as Abby John and Weinstein setup Chapman twice, while Marion finished off an "old-fashioned" three-point play to stretch the margin back to seven (32-25). The trio of Abby Ryan, Jakway and Landau wrapped up the period on an 8-2 charge with Chapman posting the only bucket for the Devils to leave it at 34-33 DC going into the locker room.

The third quarter could not have started off better for Dickinson as Marion hit two foul shots, before sticking a pair of triples to open it up to 42-33 with just 2:11 gone. Then, two layups from Chapman were the lone points for the Devils during a 9-4 Fords outburst capped off by a Jakway jumper making it 46-42 inside the final four minutes. Marion continued her dominant afternoon by collecting points 20 through 23 over the last minute to take a 50-43 lead to last period.

There appeared to be a "lid" on the basket early in the fourth as the two sides missed their first seven combined shots, until John found Chapman in the lane for a layup. Dickinson then pushed the margin to 54-43 thanks to a bucket from Marion, but then Flamini and Jakway accounted for four of the following six points to make it 56-47. The Red and White would use the final minutes to put the game away as Hollenshead and John hit from the floor, while Blackman, Hollenshead and John went 11-of-12 on the charity line during a 15-4 explosion to seal up the 71-51 victory.
