Waker's Solid Outing Leads to Late-Inning Heroics from Devils

WESTMINSTER, Md. - Sophomore right-handed pitcher Grayson Walker tossed five solid innings of six-hit two run ball on Friday afternoon against the host McDaniel College. With support from Evan Connery, Peyton Fox and Joey Sangiuolo the Red Devil offense was able to scratch two across in the top of the eighth to secure a 4-3 Centennial Conference win over the Green Terror at Preston Field.

Inside the Game
Dickinson tried to put something together early against Tyson Nercessian as with one down Andrew Mazzone smoked a double to right-center. Unfortunately, he would be left out there as Kaden Sigmon and Matt Torres went down on strikes to retire the side. The home-half of the frame saw the Green Terror get on the board versus Walker as a walk to Joey Hubinger and error allowing Tyler Yohn to reach set the stage for an RBi knock to left by Jake Smith. A flyout and groundout got Walker out of any further damage. After a quiet second for both teams the home side added onto their advantage in the last of the third when with one out Yohn singled up the box, which was followed immediately by a run-scoring hit for Smith to push it out to 2-0 through three.

The Red and White tried to get back on track offensively during the fourth when Ryan Thompson and Christian KIm each reached with just one away bringing up Dylan Posencheg. However, he and Ethan Sodl each went down chasing strike three to stall the potential rally. They got another baserunner in the fifth as Kenny Tagliareni worked a one-out free pass off of Nerceessian, but was stranded there after a lineout for Mazzone and groundout from Sigmon. Fortunately, for the Devils the pitching of Walker continued to be solid as he was able to hold the score at just 2-0 all the way through the fifth. Then in the sixth with Torres retired on a flyout, a walk to Thompson and infield single by Kim forced Nercessian from the contest and brought on Mangum to face Posencheg. He would make an impact with a two-bagger to left-center driving in Thompson and placing Kim at third. A fielder's choice for Sodl forced out Kim at home leaving men on the corners for Nathan Bowman. After a walk to Nathan Bowman, a wild pitch uncorked by Mangum with Tagliareni in the box let all players advance 90-feet which allowed Posencheg to scamper home for the tie with five-and-a-half in the books. McDaniel would reclaim the lead off of Connery during the home-half when with two outs a single and walk set the stage for an RBI double down the right-field line by Hubinger. Two batters later Connery got Yohn to groundout to short for the final out.

Singles for Sigmon and Torres along with a double-steal put two in scoring position with two down, but Kim flew out to center retiring the side. Connery allowed two to reach, while fanning two in the home part of the seventh leading to Fox entering the game on the hill. He immediately issued a walk to Santino DeFilippo to load the bases for Robert Weer. Fox dug down deep and got the batter to ground to Tagliareni at short to wrap up the frame. The Devils took their first lead of the game in the ensuing inning as walks to Derek Smith and Bowman coupled with a failed pickoff attempt by the new pitcher Ryan Gibbons left two in scoring position for Tagliareni. He would knot things at 3-3 with a sac fly to center, before Sigmon smashed a double down the right-field line to plate Bowman, but unfortunately Mazzone who was intentionally walked the batter before was thrown out trying to score to leave it at 4-3 heading to the ninth. In the last of that frame it was all about Sangiuolo as he struck out the side in order to wrap up the win and complete the Red Devils revenge for Tuesday's 13-inning affair.
