CARLISLE, Pa. - Dickinson women's basketball sophomore
Clair Marion continued her outstanding start to her season on Saturday as she recorded a career-high 21 points as the Red and White won their fourth in a row with a 59-40 conference win over Swarthmore College at the Kline Center.
Caitlin Blackman wasted little time getting on the scoreboard as she cashed in a feed from
Mia Kolb just 13-seconds in. After Caroline Selinger split a pair at the line the Red and White ripped off nine in a row to take an 11-1 edge thanks to buckets from
Lindsey Hollenshead, Kolb, and Marion with six minutes gone. The visitors recorded the next five and six of the final eight with Kim Kockenmeister hitting from deep and Norah Winfield scoring inside bringing the score to 13-7 through ten minutes.Â
The Garnet began the second strong with a 6-2 run as two foul shots by
Gina Neigel supplied the only DC offense through the opening three minutes. Dickinson then came right back with a 10-0 charge of their own as
Mia Chapman,
Kate Montgomery, and
Victoria Zerbe added their names to the scoresheet alongside of Marion making it 25-13 with 2:43 remaining. An "old-fashioned" three-point play for Kockenmeister stemmed the tide for a brief moment, before Marion buried a shot from long-range to close out the scoring at 28-16.
Jumpers by Kolb and Marion kickstarted the third for the Devils as the Red and White were able to maintain a double-digit advantage at 34-22 with three minutes off the clock. Then, after two minutes went by scoreless Marion tallied five more and Hollenshead added a jay off a Kolb feed to extend the margin to 41-27 at the 6:17 mark. A free throw from Harrison Anderson stunted the momentum for only a second, because DC answered back with a 8-0 run on buckets by Blackman, Marion, and Neigel. Carolina Lopez beat the horn with a jumper of her own to cut the deficit to 49-30 Â
Neigel recorded the first points of the fourth as she took advantage of a nice dish from Blackman. However, on the ensuing trip down the floor it would be Kockenmeister pulling up from downtown and hitting to bring the margin under 20 at 51-33 with two minutes off the clock. Dickinson scored the next four thanks to two at the stripe by
Jenna Weinstein and a tough layup in the paint for Montgomery. Swarthmore then embarked on a 7-2 push with Anderson accounting for four of the points, while first-year
Leah Dubin tallied for the Devs. The final bucket of the contest came from the hands of
Indatou Ali-Goukoye off the setup from
Molly Heron to cap off the 59-40 victory.
