Box Score (Westminster, Md.) – The Dickinson women's basketball team held off a late run by host McDaniel College to capture a 62-55 road win on Wednesday night.
The Red Devils jumped out to an 11-5 start and held a 13-12 lead at the end of the first quarter. Kate Deutsch (Marlton, N.J./Camden Catholic) scored the first basket of the game and finished an assist from Maura Leverone (Herdon, Va./Bishop O'Connell) late in the quarter to lead the Red Devils.
The Green Terror opened the second quarter with an 8-1 run to take a 20-14 lead.
Jennifer Kremp (Jenkintown, Pa./Jenkintown) knocked down a three-pointer and added a pair of free throws to cut the deficit to a field-goal, 22-20. Great ball movement led to another three-pointer for Kremp, making the score 26-25, McDaniel, at the 2:13 mark.
Claudia Maira (Clinton, N.J./Hunterdon North) fed Deutsch on a fast break and hit a three-pointer to put Dickinson back in front. The Green Terror added a late three-point play to end the half with the Red Devils on top, 30-29.
Kremp led the Red Devils in the first half with nine points behind a pair of three-pointers and 3-of-4 free throws.
A slow start in the third saw the Red Devils hit a pair of three-pointers to give Dickinson a 36-32 lead at the midpoint of the quarter. Dickinson worked the ball inside to Deutsch and Padalino and Mia Kolb (Jenkintown, Pa./Jenkintown) added a pair of free throws to stretch the margin to 42-37.
The Green Terror closed the gap at the end of the quarter, countering field-goals from Deutsch and Kate Montgomery (Scituate, Mass./Scituate) to head into the fourth with the Red Devils on top, 46-44.
The Red Devils opened the final quarter with six straight points on back-to-back scores, two rebounds and a blocked shot from Deutsch. Padalino gave Dickinson a double-digit lead at the midpoint of the period, making another strong move to the basket.
The Red Devils broke the game open, scoring 12 straight points to stretch the margin to 56-44 as Dickinson held the hosts scoreless for the first 7:23 of the period.
The Green Terror looked to rally, cutting the lead to just three behind a big three-pointer from Anna Mondoro and a steal after a missed free throw.
Halle Maeda (Santa Monica, Calif./Mira Costa) came away with a big steal for Dickinson and Padalino hit a free throw for a 57-53 advantage with just 43 seconds to play.
Maeda grabbed another steal and Padalino would go to the line with 25 seconds on clock. She hit one-of-two and McDaniel was awarded possession after some controversy on the rebound as the second shot went out of bounds.
McDaniel hit a pair of free throws, but Dickinson countered with two solid trips to the line from Maeda and Maira for the final of 62-55.
Padalino led the Red Devils with a game-high 15 points on the night. Deutsch finished with 14 points and eight rebounds while Kremp hit for 14 points as well, adding five rebounds while going 3-for-4 from beyond the arc and on the free throw line.
Maeda tallied five points, four assists, three rebounds and a pair of steals. Maira added five points and three assists and Kolb chipped in with five points, three assists, two steals and two rebounds.
The Red Devils improve to 9-7 overall and 7-4 in the Centennial Conference. They are on the road again on Saturday, traveling to Washington College for a 2:00 pm tip-off.
