Red Devils Bring Back the Wagon With Overtime Win

Box Score

(Lancaster, Pa.) – The Dickinson football team reclaimed possession of the Conestoga Wagon Trophy with an epic overtime win at Franklin & Marshall on Saturday afternoon.

It was a defensive struggle right from the start as the teams traded punts and missed field-goals throughout the first half to enter halftime still tied 0-0.

Senior Phil Petrina (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) stalled a Diplomat drive with an interception at the Red Devils' five-yard line with five minutes remaining in the first half.

The Red Devils would capitalize on another Diplomat turnover to put their first points on the board in the third quarter. First-year Anthony Cicini (Berwick, Pa./Berwick) forced a fumble and recovered to give Dickinson the ball at the F&M 16-yard line.

That would lead to a Trystin Golowski (Columbus, N.J./Bishop Eustace) field-goal from 25 yards out to break the stalemate and put Dickinson on the scoreboard.

Ironically, the Diplomats would use a turnover to stop the Red Devils and tie the game early in the fourth quarter. After an interception in the end zone, F&M drove all the way to the 10-yard line before they were held to 27-yard field-goal, tying the game with 8:09 remaining.

Each team would have another field-goal attempt and come away empty as the Diplomats missed from 44 yards out with nine seconds to play. Dickinson took a knee and sent the game into overtime.

F&M scored on its first play to quickly put the pressure on the Red Devils. Tim Graham (Darien, Conn./Darien) connected with senior Daniel Salamone (Great Falls, Va./Langley) on Dickinson's first play to force a second stanza.

The Red Devils were on offense first and saw Phillip Butler (Ambler, Pa./Upper Dublin) carry the ball three times, scoring on a 13-yard run to put Dickinson up, 17-10. They would slam the door shut after F&M found themselves at 4th-and-goal from the 10-yard line.

Sophomore Griffin Lundquist (Westport, Conn./Staples) broke through the line to sack Garrett Perschy, forcing and recovering a fumble to bring the Wagon back to Carlisle.

Graham threw for 230 yards while Butler was just shy of the century mark with 94 rushing yards. Salamone was on the receiving end of seven passes for 87 yards while Christopher Longo (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) caught a pair for 51 yards and Zach Mooney (Charlemon, Mass./Suffield Academy) had a 25-yard catch.

Brian Snow (Media, Pa./Episcopal) led the defense with 11 tackles while James Turner (Ridgefield, Conn./Suffield Academy) had 10 tackles, adding a sack and two pass break ups. Petrina and Cicini combined for 13 tackles, including 11 solos and Jaiden Cruz (Ajax, Ontario, Canada/Choate Rosemary Hall) recorded a big six-yard sack.

Jordan Hollander (Dalton, Pa./Abington Heights) averaged 41 yards on three punts, adding five solo tackles, including two for losses.

The Red Devils improve to 4-3 overall and 3-3 in the conference. They are home next Saturday, hosting Juniata College at 1:00 pm.
