Box Score (Westminster, Md.) – The Dickinson women's basketball team is quickly earning the tag of "Cardiac Kids", posting their second straight overtime win to open the Centennial Conference schedule on Tuesday night.
Senior guard Jennifer Smith (Short Hills, N.J./Millburn), drove the length of the floor and into the paint, netting the game-winner at the buzzer as the Red Devils pulled out a, 50-49, road win over McDaniel College.
It was a tale of four quarters and then a bonus as the teams headed into overtime. The Red Devils had a strong start, opening a 16-8 advantage at the end of the first period. Dickinson opened a 12-4 lead behind a pair of three-pointers from senior Helen Roberts (Oakton, Va./Oakton) and first-year Hannah Heiring (Wayzata, Minn./Wayzata).
The second quarter went the other way as McDaniel outscored Dickinson 15-3 with first-year Lauren McBride (Trenton, N.J./Gill St. Bernard's) hitting a three-pointer in the final minute as the Devils trailed 23-19 at the break.
Dickinson outscored the Terror 10-8, going 6-0 in the paint and 4-0 on second-chance points in the third quarter to trail, 31-29, heading into the fourth.
McDaniel held the lead throughout the period, and held a 42-38 advantage with 2:12 remaining in regulation. McBride went to work, scoring at the 1:36 mark, and again with a strong baseline drive to tie the game with nine seconds remaining.
The Red Devils held on the final possession, sending the game into overtime. McBride struck again and Smith traded jumpers with Liv Storer to give Dickinson a 46-44 lead. McDaniel hit a free throw and Melanie Yeomans knocked-down a jumper to put the hosts back in front by one.
McBride traded baskets with Yeomans and McDaniel came up with a steal, with just 40 seconds on the clock. The Red Devils chose to play defense and Heiring came up with a huge rebound with just five seconds on the clock.
The Red Devils called timeout and would have to go the length of the floor to get a final shot. Smith took the inbounds pass and crossed mid-court. She saw an opening and drove into the paint, lofting a runner as time expired to give Dickinson the win.
Despite being the conference opener, it is a key one as the Red Devils claim their third straight to improve to 4-1 overall and 1-0 in the Centennial.
