#8 Ranked Hopkins Tops Devils to Remain Unbeaten

(Carlisle, Pa.) –The Dickinson football team came out strong against highly ranked Johns Hopkins, holding the potently offensive Blue Jays to just a touchdown in the opening quarter and trailed just 7-3, midway through the second.

The Blue Jays shifted into a hurry up offense and changed the tempo of the game, scoring three times to close out the half on the way to a 45-10 win on Friday night. The Blue Jays, ranked eighth in the American Football Coaches Association Poll and ninth by D3football.com, remain unbeaten on the season, improving to 6-0.

The Red Devil defense had a strong start, stalling Hopkins' opening drive and forcing a punt. The visitors would capitalize on a turnover, going 39 yards on three plays to take a 7-0 lead with 6:43 remaining in the first quarter.

Sophomore Matt Butz (Monkton, Md./Hereford) gave the Devils some momentum with a leaping interception at the Dickinson 41 yard-line. Hopkins regained possession with an interception at their own 17 but the Red Devil defense had another strong series, forcing a Brandon Hong punt.

Dickinson put together a nice drive, burning almost five minutes off the clock. Sophomore Stephen Walker (Darien, Conn./Darien) split the uprights with a 45 yard field-goal to make the score 7-3, with 8:57 to play in the half.

The Blue Jays moved the ball to the Dickinson one yard-line on the next possession. The Devils made three huge goal line stands behind strong play up front from Kevin Sherry (Swarthmore, Pa./Strath Haven) and John Minicozzi (Media, Pa./Episcopal Academy). Dickinson looked to have made the stop at the goal line on fourth down but Bradley Munday was able to reach across for the touchdown for a 14-3 lead with 6:03 remaining in the half.

The Devils made another strong stand, forcing a turnover on fourth down, but were forced to punt with just under two minutes to play. Hopkins went into hurry-up mode, going 73 yards on six plays in just 47 seconds to stretch the lead to 21-3.

The Blue Jays took possession with 34 seconds remaining in the half and showed no signs of slowing down. Jon Germano connected with Luke McFadden on back-to-back passes to cap a 64-yard drive, scoring with just 1.6 seconds on the clock.

Hopkins received the kick-off to open the second half and would strike quickly. They put points on the board on their first two possessions to lead 42-3.

Senior Stephen Black (Baltimore, Md./Boys' Latin) broke free for a 12-yard run and sophomore quarterback Billy Burger (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle) rushed for 60 yards, scoring on a seven yard keeper to make the score, 42-10, with 3:25 to play in the third quarter.

Sherry and Minicozzi came up with a big stop on third down, forcing a 32-yard field-goal to start the fourth quarter for the final points of the night.

Senior Ned Emala (Baltimore, Md./Gilman) turned in a strong performance on defense while classmate Pat Irwin (Altoona, Pa./Bishop Guilfoyle) tallied five solo tackles.

Sophomore Tyler Heisey (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) recorded a game-high nine tackles while Bryan Latorraca (Stamford, Conn./St. Luke's) added eight stops with one for a loss of five yards. First-year James Turner (Ridgefield, Conn./Suffield Academy) made seven solo tackles as well.

Burger completed 17-of-30 passes for 153 yards and ran for 76 on the night. Sophomore Jake Walbert (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson) made six catches for 73 yards while tight-end Darrion Bunce (Kelowa, B.C./Gunnery School, Conn.) made a nice catch and run for 26 yards.

Germano completed 21-of-32 passes for 232 yards with Quinn Donaldson covering 88 yards on five catches. Ryan Cary rushed for 128 yards and two touchdowns while Munday caught two touchdown passes on the night.

The Red Devils slip to 0-6 overall and 0-5 in the Centennial Conference. They are on the road next weekend, traveling to McDaniel College for a 1:00 pm kick-off.
