(Charlottesville, Va.) – The Dickinson women's squash team suffered a pair of heartbreaking losses on Saturday, falling 5-4 to Johns Hopkins and Georgetown University. The Red Devils closed out the day on a high note, claiming a 9-0 win over Fordham University.
First-year Stuart Lemay (Harwich Port, Mass./Westover) went 3-0 on the day, surviving in five sets against Johns Hopkins (7-11, 11-8, 11-8, 7-11, 12-10). She won in straight sets against Georgetown and Fordham.
Classmate Freddie Bancroft (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) outlasted JHU's Caroline Plapinger in five sets and went four sets in a loss to the Hoyas.
Betsy Vuchinich (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shady Side Academy) and Meghan Shippe (Baltimore, Md./Roland Park) posted straight set wins in the eighth and ninth flights against Hopkins. Vuchinich came up with a five-set win over Georgetown's Allison Elkman.
Casey Merbler (Baltimore, Md./Roland Park) posted second flight wins against Georgetown and Fordham. Patricia Francis-Hall (New York, N.Y./The Pomfret School) put up a big challenge against Hopkins, but fell (3-11, 11-3, 14-12, 12-10). She battled to a five-set win over Georgetown and started 11-0 in a straight set win against Fordham.
Merritt Davis (Baltimore, Md./Garrison Forest) posted an 11-3, 11-1, 11-3 win in the fourth flight of the Fordham match. Ashley Doyle (Readfield, Maine/Kents Hill School) outlasted Caroline Donahue, 11-8, 11-9, 11-3.
On Sunday the Red Devils suffered a 9-0 loss to host University of Virginia. Francis-Hall looked to rally with an 11-9 third set whlie Shippe went 11-7, 11-6 before falling 11-3.
The Red Devils move to 2-6 on the season. They are scheduled to return to action next weekend at New York University.
