Late Surge Lifts Devils to 6-0 Start

Box Score

(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson women's soccer team struck twice in the second half to remain unbeaten on the season with a 2-0 win over visiting Alvernia University on Wednesday.

The Red Devils were relentless in the attacking third, firing off 37 shots on the afternoon. The game was much tighter than the statistics would indicate as the Crusaders played a strong match.

Alexis Benton recorded the lone shot for Alvernia, but it was a dangerous ball that rolled just outside the post in the first half. Two Red Devil defenders were also there to track the shot as it went wide of the net.

The Red Devils finally broke through as junior Nicole Fronsdahl (Groton, Mass./Groton) received a long pass from the midfield by Cate Maugle (Glenmoore, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) and found the back of the net to put Dickinson on the board in the 57th minute.

First-year Andrea Caya (Sellersville, Pa./Pennridge) added some insurance with her fourth goal of the season. Caya one-timed a beautiful cross from sophomore Jill Marini (Redding, Conn./Joel Barlow) to give the Devils a 2-0 advantage with just over four minutes remaining in the game.

In the end, the Devils outshot the Crusaders, 37-1, and held an 8-0 edge in corner kicks.

Junior Hannah Matlack (Neeham, Mass./Noble & Greenough) anchored a strong defensive effort as Dickinson posted its fourth shutout of the year. First-year Amanda Masterson (Essex Falls, N.J./West Essex) made her first start in goal, and improved to 2-0 in the nets.

Jessica Plunkett finished with 13 saves in goal for Alvernia, stopping a penalty kick in 74th minute to keep the score 1-0. The Crusaders slip to 4-4 on the season.

The Red Devils, ranked 24th in the D3soccer.com national poll, improves to 6-0 on the season. They are home again on Saturday, opening Centennial Conference play with a 3:00 kick-off against Haverford College.
