(Baltimore. Md.) – The Dickinson football team turned in a strong first half, keeping the potent #14-ranked Johns Hopkins' offense in check. The Blue Jays broke the game open in the second, en route to a 42-17 win on Friday night.
The Red Devils won the toss and elected to receive. They would be forced to punt on their opening possession, however, giving the Blue Jays the ball on their own 46 yard line. Six plays later, Bradley Munday caught a five yard pass from Robbie Matey with 10:29 on the clock.
The Red Devils kept the ball on the ground, looking to grind out yardage and also grind out the clock, keeping the Blue Jay offense on the sideline. The teams traded possessions before Dickinson put together a solid scoring drive, covering 83 yards.
Sophomore Cedric Madden (Norristown, Pa./Chestnut Hill Academy) connected with Colin Rodgers (Jamison, Pa./St. Joe's Prep) on a 37-yard halfback pass, stunning the Hopkins defense, to put Dickinson on the Blue Jays' 12 yard line. Two plays later, fullback Mike Capone (Dupont, Pa./Pittston Area) scored on a 10 yard run to pull the Devils even, 7-7.
Hopkins struck twice in the second quarter on a pair of long runs by Stuart Walters. Walters broke free for a 49 yard touchdown 13:07 remaining in the half, and scored on a 42 yard run at the 6:10 mark.
Trailing, 21-7, the Red Devils stuck to the game plan, keeping the ball on the ground. The defense later forced a fumble, as Teddy Airoldi (Bethlehem, Pa./Allentown Central Catholic) knocked the ball out of Matey's hands and Matt Giel (Gibsonia, Pa./Shadyside Academy) recovered.
The Devils took over and moved the ball into Blue Jay territory. A pass interference penalty moved the ball to the Hopkins' 19 yard line. Junior Adam Kaminski (Exton, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) split the uprights from 36 yards out at the end of the half to cut the deficit to, 21-10.
Hopkins received to open the second half but the Red Devil defense held, forcing the Blue Jays to punt. Dickinson was forced to punt as well, setting up a 50 yard scoring drive to put Hopkins up, 28-10, with 6:40 to play in the quarter.
Matey broke a 47 yard run on a quarterback option, carrying the ball to the Dickinson 22 yard line. He connected for a scoring strike with Jared Beekman on the next play, stretching the lead to, 35-10, with 13:40 remaining in the game.
The teams traded punts before Dickinson put together another scoring drive to cut the deficit to, 35-17. Junior quarterback Cole Ahnell (Rockville, Md./Walter Johnson) capped an 11 play, 56-yard drive with a five yard run into the end zone, with 8:38 left to play.
The Devils continued to battle, setting up for an on-sides kick, but Hopkins was able to cover the football.
Brandon Cherry broke away for a 60 yard run, scampering to the Dickinson 10 yard line. Mitch Helmandollar (Glenolden, Pa./Interboro) knocked the ball out of Cherry's hands, but another Blue Jay was there to recover. Dionisio Roman closed out the scoring with a 10 yard run, making the final, 42-17.
Cherry ran for a game-high 152 yards on 14 carries while Walters finished with 124 yard on 15 attempts. Matey rushed for 56 yards, throwing for an additional 150 and three scores. Keith Corliss led the Blue Jay defense a game-high 12 tackles.
Senior Michael Miller (Hainesport, N.J./Bishop Eustace) led the Devils with nine tackles while Jake Myers (Middletown, Del./St. Andrew's) and Jack Margavitch (York, Pa./Dallastown) each recorded seven stops on the night.
Ahnell was on the brink of reaching the century mark, rushing for 92 yards. Madden covered 43 yards on eight carries to go with his 37 yard pass to Rodgers.
Sophomore Austin High (Wilmington, Del./Archmere) took over punting duties and had a busy night. He kicked nine times for just under 35 yards per kick with a long of 53.
The Red Devils slip to 2-4 overall and 2-3 in the Centennial Conference. Hopkins improves to 6-0 overall and 5-0 in the CC. Dickinson returns home to face McDaniel College next Saturday. Opening kick-off is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
