(Lancaster, Pa.) – The Dickinson College women's basketball team battled to the end at Franklin & Marshall, but the Diplomats pulled away for a final of 69-57 on Wednesday night.
The Red Devils were even with the Diplomats in the early going, playing to an 8-8 tie at the 14:11 mark. F&M went on a 5-0 run to pull in front, 13-8, before senior Taylor Miller (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion) converted a three-point play and junior Belma Mekic (Camp Hill, Pa./Cedar Cliff) hit a jumper to knot the game at 13.
F&M went on another run, taking a 19-14 lead with just under seven minutes remaining in the first half. Dickinson answered again as Kellie Nissen (Farmington, Conn./Farmington) came off the bench and knocked-down a three-pointer.
The Diplomats stretched the margin again with the Devils battling back once to close out the half. First-year Sarah Phillips (West Amwell, N.J./South Hunterdon) drained a three-pointer at the end of the half to cut the F&M advantage to 30-28.
A strong start to the second half gave the Devils the lead, early in the second half. The teams went back and forth, trading leads with F&M pulling in front, 39-38, with 15 minutes to play. The Diplomats opened a 41-40 lead to 47-40 at the midpoint of the second half.
F&M capitalized on an offensive rebound off a free throw to extend the lead to double-figures. They went up, 54-40, with 8:51 to play in the game. The lead grew to 17 on a three-pointer with six minutes to play in the game.
The Diplomats held a 13-point lead but the Devils continued to threaten a comeback. They would hold on down the stretch, leading, 69-52, at the 1:53 mark. The Devils scored the final five points of the game for the final of 69-57.
Mekic led the Red Devils with 15 points and five rebounds. Bridget Borgese (Swarthmore, Pa./Notre Dame de Namur) added 14 points, scoring 12 in the second half. She went 6-for-6 from the free throw line and hit 4-of-6 from the floor.
Miller finished with seven points and three assists. Dana Walsh (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) chipped in with six points, seven rebounds and a pair of assists. She was 4-for-4 from the line as the Devils hit 18-of-19 as a team.
Kristina McCarthy led F&M (11-5, 8-3) with a double-double of 20 points and 21 rebounds. She grabbed 11 on the offensive end and blocked five shots. The Diplomats were dominant on the boards, out-rebounding the Devils, 49-31.
The Red Devils slip to 2-14 overall and 2-9 in the Centennial Conference. They travel to Johns Hopkins University on Saturday for a 1:00 pm tip-off.
