(Baltimore, Md) – Johns Hopkins University jumped out to
an early 14-0 lead, using two long drives that consumed just under
10 minutes of the first quarter. They would go on to a 44-10 win
over visiting Dickinson in Centennial Conference football on Friday
night.
The Red Devils struggled offensively, recording just one
first-down in the opening period, and were forced to punt on their
first four possessions. They were held to just 77 yards in the
first half, of which 68 came in the second quarter.
The Blue Jays went 87 yards on their first possession, capping a
15-play scoring drive with a one-yard scoring run by Nick Fazio at
the 8:43 mark.
Hopkins stretched the lead to 14-0 on a 17-yard touchdown pass
from Hewitt Tomlin to Sam Wernick with 1:39 remaining in the first
quarter. The Blue Jays added to their lead with another scoring
strike from Tomlin, finding Tucker Michaels in the back of the end
zone to cap an 85-yard drive with 5:07 to play in the first
half.
The Red Devils put three points on the board just before
halftime as senior Gordon Craig
(Grove City, Pa./Grove City) kicked a 23-yard field-goal
with eight seconds on the clock. Junior Jordan
Kaufman (Somerset, Pa./Somerset) came on to split time
under center with starter Ricky Martz
(Pottsgrove, Pa./Pottsgrove), running for 30 yards to lead
the scoring drive.
The second half started much the same as the Red Devils tried to
catch the Blue Jays off guard with an on-side kick. The kick did
not travel 10 yards, giving possession to Hopkins. The Devils were
also whistled for off-sides, giving the Blue Jays possession on the
Dickinson 32-yard line. That would lead to a touchdown pass to
Scott Cremens to put Hopkins in front, 28-3.
An 80-yard pass from Tomlin to wide receiver Dan Wodicka would
add to the Hopkins lead, making the score 35-3 with 6:01 remaining
in the third quarter. Alex Lachman tacked on a 31-yard field-goal
on Hopkins' next possession. The woes would continue on the ensuing
kick-off as the Blue Jays would fall on a fumble and three plays
later, Lachman would split the uprights from 44 yards out, making
the score 41-3, as the teams headed into the final quarter.
The fourth quarter brought some life for the Red Devils as they
would find the end zone as Mike Shimkin
(New Hope, Pa./Princeton Day School) broke through to cap
a 69-yard drive. The Blue Jays would answer with another Lachman
field-goal, this one from 20 yards, running the score to 44-10.
The Devils finished with 105 yards rushing on the night and 86
yards through the air. The offensive line did provide solid
protection, allowing just one sack.

(Westford, Mass./Phillips) led the Red Devil defense with
a game-high 13 tackles, making six solo stops. Scott
Sullivan (Coatesville, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) added 12
stops while Jack
Connolly (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) tallied 10
tackles, including seven solos.
Tomlin led the Hopkins offense, completing 25-of-35 passes for
271 yards and four touchdowns. Wodicka finished with nine catches
for 155 yards while Jonathan Rigaud rushed for 115 yards.
The Blue Jays improve to 3-2 overall and 3-1 in the Centennial
Conference. The Red Devils slip to 1-4 overall and 1-3 in the CC.
