CARLISLE, Pa. - Senior forward
David Petrusev muscled his way down the lane and finished at the rim with 0.5 left to give the Dickinson men's basketball team their second straight win and their sixth out of their last eight games as they downed the University of Mary Washington Eagles, 72-71 at the Kline Center on Monday night.
- The visitors got out to the early 5-0 edge not even two minutes in thanks to Jadon Burgess and Jay Randall.
- Triples for Cole Cosby and Joey Dopirak coupled with four points by David Petrusev brought the home side ahead 10-7 with 14:41 left.
- Dickinson continued to hold off the guests with two points each by Isaiah Edmond, Luis Ruiz and Petrusev, before Ryan Leskauskas delivered from long-range to open the advantage out to 19-10 at the halfway point.
- Eight of the next ten went to UMW as a jumper for Burgess pulled the margin to just 21-18 with 6:39 left.
- Two minutes later with the Red and White holding on to a one-point lead (23-22), Brandon Wiercinski, Cosby, Leskauskas and Petrusev contributed to a 10-3 DC run to push the lead out to 33-25.
- Five of the last six points in the frame went to the visitors as they closed to within 34-30 at half.Â
- Zack Blue opened the period with two free throws, before Wiercinski sunk a pair of triples and Edmond converted a tough layup to make it 42-33 at the 3:29 mark.
- The Eagles then used three three-balls from Cameron McCravy and a solo by Blue to cut the deficit down to just two (46-44) less than three minutes later.
- Four points for Petrusev and a pull-up jay out of the hands of Edmond kept the Red and White in front barely at 52-50 (10:03).
- A 9-3 spurt from the Eagles ending on an "old-fashioned" three-point play made it 59-55 UMW with 7:40 remaining.
- Dickinson than righted the ship as two at the charity line by Petrusev kicked off a 13-3 Devils charge with points also coming from Ruiz and Wiercinski (68-62).
- However, the Eagles didn't go away as Kye Robinson, Blue and McCravy cut the deficit to just one at 68-67 with 18:44 gone.
- A layup for Randall and two at the line by Blue off a DC giveaway put the guests back ahead 71-70.
- Dickinson would not be denied though as coming out of a timeout with 4.3 seconds left Wiercinski in-bounded the ball to Petrusev who carried three men down the lane and powered up for the winning layup at the horn.Â
