Devils Swept by Green Terror as Postseason Chances Come Down to Weekend

WESTMINSTER, Md. - The Dickinson softball team went into Tuesday's Centennial Conference road doubleheader against McDaniel College knowing that a split in each of their final two series would be enough to book them a trip to next week's conference tournament. However, those hopes took a serious hit as the Red and White were swept out by the Green Terror falling by scores of 7-5 an 7-2 at the McDaniel Softball Park.

Game One (Terror 7, DEVILS 5)
Records: McDaniel - 15-20, 5-8 Centennial | Dickinson - 10-18, 7-6 Centennial
Time of Game: 1:32
Pitching Decision: W - Hannah Costa (8-6) | L - Abby Kohan (4-6)

Inside the Game
Dickinson began the game strong as Jessie Sandusky led off with a walk, before moving to third on a double down the line by Jane Lloyd. Two batters latter Zoe Kleeblatt was safe on a fielder's scoring one, while an error let the second cross. The score stayed 2-0 into the top of the third as Kohan was outstanding in the circle early on. The top-half of the third saw the Devils make it 3-0 as an error and bunt single put both Sandusky and Lloyd in scoring position for Kleeblatt with one one away. She provided a sacrifice fly to center plating Sandusky. Following a one-two-three start to the fourth put up by Costa, the Green Terror would take their first lead of the day at 5-3 on the strength of five hits and one Dickinson miscue with Libertie Schatzman, Mandy Butz and Riley Jackson providing the RBI knocks. The Devils battled back during the top of the fifth as singles for Laia Gwathmey and Sandusky put runners on the corners for Eden Blanker. She plated one with a sac fly to left, before Kleeblatt smashed one back up the box driving in Lloyd to knot the game at 5-5 going to the bottom of inning number five. With two on and one down, Schatzman doubled to left-center scoring one, followed by an RBI single for Ashley Shawyer to grab a 7-5 edge entering the sixth. Dickinson had a chance to tie things back up in the sixth as three consecutive two-out singles loaded the bags, but Lloyd grounded out to second ending the rally. Then, in the seventh, Costa setdown the trio of Erin McMahon, Blanker and Kleeblatt in order.

Devils Circle Report
Kohan suffered the loss allowing eight hits and five runs (one earned) over 3.2 innings with two strikeouts and a walk. Kaylie Renner pitched the final 2.1 frames giving up three hits and two runs.

Game Two (Terror 7, DEVILS 2)

Time of Game: 1:34
Pitching Decision: W - Hannah Costa (9-6) | L - Erin McMahon (3-5)

Inside the Game
After a quiet first inning for both starters, the home side went to work in the last of the second using a single and walk to set the stage for a a two-run two-bagger from Shawyer making it 2-0 with a pair of frames in the book. A triple and single brought home another one during the third to stretch the margin to 3-0 through three innings. With one gone in the top of the fourth, knocks by McMahon and Kohan put two on for Renner. She stepped into the box and ripped a two-run single right back up the middle scoring both runners and trimming the gap to just one (3-2) as the game shifted to the last of the fifth. A hit batter, DC miscue and wild pitch led to McDaniel pushing the lead to 4-2. That brought Renner to the circle replacing McMahon and following a strikeout of Jessica Millard, Schatzman smacked an RBI single to center for the 5-2 advantage going to the sixth. Dickinson tried to mount a two-out rally in the sixth as singles for Emma Glosson and Renner had two on for the Red and White, but Gwathmey bounced out to the pitcher retiring the side. A single and a pair of fielder's choices had runners at the corners for Taylor Routzahn who came up big with a two-run single to center extending the gap to 7-2 with Dickinson facing "last call". The Devils would load the pillows in the frame with singles by Blanker and McMahon along with Kleeblatt being hit by a pitch. However, Kohan lineout to third ending the game.
