Devils Fall in Extras, before Run-Ruling Phoenix in DH Split

CARLISLE, Pa. - The Dickinson softball team returned to action for the first time since Thursday afternoon with a rescheduled non-conference doubleheader against local foe Wilson College at Dickinson Park. Unfortunately, for the Red and White they fell shot in game one dropping it 6-5 in eight innings, before posting a "run rule" victory in the nightcap 10-2.

Game One: Phoenix 6, DEVILS 5 (F/8)
Time of Game: 1:50
Pitching Decision: W - Rylee Piper (3-2) | L - Abby Kohan (1-4)

Inside the Game
Starting pitchers Elena Worthington (Wilson) and Kaylie Renner (Dickinson) had perfect first innings setting down the opponent "one-two-three". Then in the top of the second, Wilson used a triple from Taylor Barker and a DC error to take a 1-0 lead. That was followed with a two-out rally by the Phoenix as Alyssa Wenger walked, before a two-bagger from Kiera O'Brine made it 2-0. Another Dickinson miscue let the third runner of the game cross to send things to the last of the second at 3-0. The Devils tried to chip away in their half of the frame, but a two out walk to Emily Whelan was left on the bases. Two batters into the third the visitors added another run thanks to a single and double. Later in the inning, back-to-back singles by Maddy Briggs and Haley Privett stretched it to 5-0 heading to the bottom-half. However, the Red and White were not deterred by the deficit as a walk to Lauren Routzahn and base hit from Emma Varella placed runners on the corners for Jessie Sandusky. She produced a two-run single back up the box to trim the gap to 5-2. Following a fielder's choice and stolen base by Jane Lloyd, Eden Blanker smoked a two-run double into left-center making the margin just one (5-4) heading to the fourth.

Kohan went to the circle for the Devils in the fourth trying to give Dickinson a chance to find the equalizing run and that was exactly what she did as she allowed just three runners over the next three innings with none of them reaching second base. That let the home side enter the last of the sixth still trying to knot the game as a leadoff double for Emily Whelan came in to score two batters later on a groundout by Routzahn knotting things at 5 heading to the seventh. After another strong frame from Kohan, a single and stole base for Sandusky along with a groundout by Lloyd put the winning run at third with one gone. Unfortunately, a popup and groundout forced the game to the eighth. Wilson took the lead with two out when Wenger singled up the middle to drive in the "ghost runner" Barker. The Red and White had their chance with Laia Gwathmey placed on second to begin the frame, but three consecutive popouts ended the game.

Devils Circle Report
Renner went the first three innings giving up five runs (two earned) on six hits with one strikeout. Kohan suffered the loss in relief tossing a solid five frames scattering three hits, but unfortunately surrendered the winning run during the eighth

Game Two: DEVILS 10, Phoenix 2 (F/5)
Time of Game: 1:45
Pitching Decision: W - Erin McMahon (2-2) | L - Paige Dill (3-2)

Inside the Game
McMahon hit some problems in the top of first when with two out and one on Barker and Brookens provided back-to-back RBI doubles to take a 2-0 lead heading to the bottom of the first. Two batters into the Devils attack they were on the board as Sandusky doubled down the left-field line, before Lloyd drove her home with a knock to left-center. Later in the frame Kohan made it 2-2 with a single to left, but she was thrown out trying to reach second ending the rally. After a quiet second, the Red and White went to work in the last of the third with Sandusky opening things up with a triple, prior to coming in when Lloyd provided a sacrifice bunt. Singles from Blanker and Kohan had runners at the corners with two down when Whelan smacked a single to left pushing it to 4-2. However, Dickinson could do no more damage as Rylee Piper replaced Dill in the circle and got McMahon to flyout to right. Following a strong top of the fourth by McMahon with two strikeouts, a single for Gwathmey and a Wilson error with Sandusky in the box had two on for Lloyd. She picked up an RBI with a groundout and Blanker ripped a single to left opening the lad to 6-2 entering the fifth. Another strong frame for McMahon, set the stage for the Devils to put the game away in the bottom-half when singles by Kohan and Whelan coupled with a free pass to McMahon filled the cushions with no outs. Gwathmey made it 7-2 with an infield single, before a fielder's choice as well as an error during the at-bat by Marah Goldman let two more cross extending the gap to 9-2. Two batters later, a fielder's choice off the stick of Lloyd allowed Gwathmey to scamper home from third to set the eight-run "mercy rule" at 10-2.

Devils Circle Report
McMahon was masterful for the Red and White tossing five innings giving up just three hits and two runs to go along with a half-dozen strikeouts.

The On-Deck Circle
Dickinson (3-11) will have a little over a week off before their next game when they kickoff Centennial Conference action with a doubleheader against the Mules of Muhlenberg College at Dickinson Park beginning at 3pm.
