CARLISLE, Pa. - The Dickinson softball team continued their solid conference season on Tuesday afternoon by sweeping a doubleheader over the host Gettysburg College by identical 8-4 scores at Bobby Jones Field.
Game One - DEVILS 8, Bullets 4
Time of Game - 2:01
Pitching Decision
W -
Lindsay Kucker (7-3) | L - Paige Forry (10-5)
Inside the Game
The Red and White claimed the lead in the top of the first when with one-out
Jane Lloyd smoked a triple to right leading to an RBI fielder's choice by
Eden Blanker. Bullets starter Paige Forry settled in after that and got back-to-back strikeouts to end the inning. Dickinson continued to add-on during the second as singles by
Abby Kohan and
Emily Whelan, followed by
Brooke Espenshade getting hit by a pitch loaded the bases with no outs. After a strikeout of
Laila Gwathmey and a fielder's choice by
Devon Kueny that resulted in Kohan being forced out at home, Lloyd worked a walk to plate one before Blanker did the same to take a 3-0 lead into the third.
Devils starter
Riley Kuehn was cruising early allowing just one base runner out of the first ten batters she faced. Then, in the fourth a leadoff triple was followed two hitters later by a Giovanna Komst single to cut it down to 3-1 through four. Dickinson got the run back during the fifth when with two away an error, single, and hit batter filled the pillows for Gwathmey who worked a walk to score the fourth of the game for DC. Unfortunately, the Red and White could do no more damage as Kueny popped up to second for the final out. The last of the sixth saw the home side storm back into the game as a double, single and another double resulted in one coming in and leaving two in scoring position for Allegra DeCandia. She ripped a two-run double to left tying the game. That chased Kuehn from the game and brought on
Lindsay Kucker who got a popout, strikeout and groundout to retire the side.
Zoe Kleeblatt started the seventh with a single up the box and then advanced to third with one gone when
Emily Whelan singled to left. After she stole second and Espenshade worked a free pass the bags were full for Gwathmey. Her fielder's choice drove in one, before back-to-back knocks by Kueny and Lloyd pushed it out to 7-4. Two batters later
Paige Hahn was plunked to score run number eight and set up last call for the Bullets. Kucker would allow a single and walk in the home-half, but got Jess Campana to pop up for the final out.
Game Two - DEVILS 8, Bullets 4
Time of Game - 1:43
Pitching Decision
W -
Lindsay Kucker (8-3) | L - Megan Hughes (6-5)
Inside the Game
Pitching was the name of the game early as neither starting pitcher
Lindsay Kucker or Megan Hughes allowed a hit through the first three frames of the game. Then, in the fourth, a two-bagger by Hahn followed by a groundout and wild pitch made it 1-0. Consecutive singles from Kohan and Whelan along with a passed ball had two in scoring position for Espenshade who delivered a sacrifice fly for the 2-0 edge. During the bottom-half a single and double allowed the Bullets to peg a run back, before three straight groundouts ended the inning.
Dickinson pushed it out to 3-1 two hitters into the fifth thanks to singles by Kueny and Lloyd. After a groundout for Blanker, base hits off the sticks of Hahn as well as Kleeblatt bumped the margin to 4-1. A walk of Kohan loaded the bags, before a wild pitch out of the hand of Hughes stretched the lead to four at 5-1 going to the home-half. Kucker hit a player in last of the inning, but recorded a flyout and a double-play to wrap up the frame. A single and two free passes put three "ducks on the pond" for
Jen Klepfer who roped a two-bagger to dead-center driving home two for the 7-1 advantage. That was followed up by a sac fly for Kleeblatt making it 8-1. Three straight hits allowed two to come in during the bottom of the sixth. That led to
Kaylie Renner entering the circle and recorded the final out of the inning. After a quiet top of the seventh, two singles and a DC miscue let the Bullets scratch their fourth across of the game. However, the Devils got Campana to groundout to short for the last out and the 8-4 victory.
