Devils Split Two on Tuesday in Arizona

TUSCON, Ariz. - The Dickinson softball team split a pair of games on Tuesday afternoon falling to Wisconsin La-Crosse in the first game, before out-slugging Webster University in eight innings by a score of 15-13 to run their record to 2-4 on their spring break trip so far.

Game One - Eagles 11, DEVILS 2 (F/5)
Pitching Decision

W - Elise Weinzierl (3-3) | L - Abby Kohan (0-2)

Inside the Game
After leadoff hitter Krya Lard reached on an error, singles by Jordyn McCormack and Maddy Bornbach put La-Crosse on top 1-0 with one gone. Nicole Zoellner turned into a rally killer when Kohan induced an inning-ending double play to retire the side. The Eagles continued to add on during the second securing three hits and scoring four times with Madi O'Brien providing an RBI single, before two batters later Lard cleared the bags with a two-run two-bagger plating Megan Scheidt (reached on error) and O'Brien making it 4-0. A fielder's choice and two walks led to the fifth run of the game when McCormack strolled home on a Zoellner free pass. The was the end of the day for Kohan in the circle as Kaylie Renner came in and recorded a flyout to end the frame. Four more came across in the third when two singles and a fielder's choice led to bases loaded where Lard picked up an RBi walk (6-0). Two batters later it was 8-0 when Jordan Schultz smacked a two-run double, before moving to third on a passed ball allowing Lard to come home for the 9-0 edge. Lindsay Kucker took over at pitcher and recorded a strikeout and popout to end the rally. Dickinson's first baserunner of the game came in the last of the third when Laila Gwathmey singled to right with one down. However, she was erased on a fielder's choice for out number two, before Devon Kueny grounded back to the pitcher for the final out.

La-Crosse plated two more an inning later as three walks, resulted in Schultz delivering a sac fly to left scoring one. Joette Kassa then followed with an RBI knock to center adding to the lead and leaving runners on the corner for Zoellner. She talllied the last out of the top-half of the fourth with a pop-up to third. The Red and White got on the board in the home-half when Jessie Sandusky reached on an error and advanced to second on a miscue by the catcher. Two batters after that Paige Hahn got to first safely (advanced to second on throw) on the third Eagles error of the frame, which allowed Sandusky to scamper home. Kucker produced the final DC run of the game with a two-out infield single, prior to a strikeout from Jen Klepfer stalling the Devils roll. The Red and White would get a double from Gwathmey and a walk by Sandusky in the bottom of the fifth, but would also strikeout three times to end the game.

Game Two - DEVILS 15, Gorloks 13 (F/8)
Pitching Decision

W - Abby Kohan (1-0) | L - Kaley Adzick (0-1)

Inside the Game
Dickinson was out of the gates fast scoring three times in the first inning. Singles by Kueny and Lloyd led to a two-run double off the stick of Kohan. That was the end of the day for Gorloks starter Cheyenne Dickens who was replaced by Emma Steltzer who was greeted with a Hahn RBI knock for the 3-0 lead through one. The Red and White added three more a frame later when with two gone Kueny and Lloyd each recorded a single, before Kohan plated them both with a hit to center. Hahn then stepped into the box and drove a single to right scoring one more (6-0).

After a scoreless third, Kueny extended the margin to 7-0 as she hit the ball to the pitcher who threw it way allowing her to race to third, but then the first baseman also committed an error on the play letting her charge home. A hit for Lloyd along with a fielder's choice by Kohan put two on for Emily Whelan who plated one with an infield single stretching it to 8-0 through three-and-a-half. Webster finally got to Devils starter Riley Kuehn during the fourth when a leadoff two-bagger, a stolen base and a walk put players on the corners for Jonelle Coertze. With her at-bat a wild pitch let a run score to make it 8-1 after four. The Gorloks continued to chip away at the deficit a frame later as they totaled six runs on seven hits against the DC pitching tandem of Renner and Kucker. The big blows within the rally came from Madi Stichling and Ainsley Hinz who each provided two-run singles, while Adzick and Kearney both plated one to cut it down to 8-7 heading to the sixth. Lloyd, Kohan and Hahn were set down one-two-three in the top of the sixth. The Devils started the home-half of the sixth strong getting a strikeout and groundout with the first two hitters. However, back-to-back doubles allowed the tying run to score. Then, an error and a walk filled the bags for Hinz. Both she and Adzick worked free passes to score two more and force Kohan to take over in the circle. She surrendered a two-run knock to Jaelin Holdaway, prior to getting Emma Bovaconti to fly out putting the score at 12-8 heading to Dickinson's last chance.

With two down and a runner at first in the seventh the Red and White looked to put together a game-tying rally. Glosson began things with a double to have two in scoring position for Gwathmey. She ripped the offering to center driving home a pair, followed immediately by a two-run single by Kueny to close within 12-11. Next up was Lloyd who reach safely on an error to score the tying run and then Kohan smoked one to left giving DC the 13-12 edge sending the game to last of the seventh. Unfortunately, for the Devils, Webster found the response as Stichling worked a leadoff walk, followed by two quick outs to leave a runner at second for Kearney who delivered the tying hit to force extras.

Kleeblatt was placed on second to begin the eighth and was advanced to third by Whelan who was safe on an error leaving two in scoring position for Sandusky. She would take care of clearing the bags with a two-run rip out to left giving DC a 15-13 lead. Kucker, Glosson and Kleeblatt were then put away in order to wrap-up the top half. Kohan made sure the game lasted no longer by striking out Hinz, getting Adzick to fly out and Holdaway to groundout to secure the win.
