(Baltimore, Md) - The Dickinson men's basketball team pursued a third straight Centennial Conference victory in Baltimore, but a late run came up short as the Red Devils dropped a 65-58 decision to Johns Hopkins at Goldfarb Gym.
Senior Elijah Wright (Orange, N.J./The Pennington School) sparked the charge for Dickinson, leading all scorers with 15 points on the afternoon. Wright recorded eight in the second half, while classmate Mike Hinckley (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Episcopal Academy) continued his steady production, with 13 points and seven rebounds on the day.
After tip-off, the Red Devils took an early 4-0 lead in the first two and a half minutes as Wright and first-year Adam Drummond (Cork, Ireland/Taft School, Conn.) connected on jump shots. Hopkins surged forward, thanks to ten first half points by Harry O'Neil coming off the bench. First-year Ryan Robinson (Vienna, Va./George Marshall) hit a clutch three-pointer after a nice look from Hinckley with five seconds remaining in the half to cut the Blue Jay advantage to three and give Dickinson momentum at the break with a 32-29 Hopkins favor.
The Blue Jays started the second stanza with energy, completing a 9-0 run in the opening three minutes, and bumping their lead to the largest of the afternoon at 14 points with 12:05 remaining. After chipping away down the stretch, first-year forward Jack Tierney (Darien, Conn./Darien) connected on a three-pointer with 30 seconds left to bring Dickinson back within six. The late Red Devil run wasn't enough as Daniel Villa poured in 12 second half tallies of his 14-point total to lead Hopkins. Connor Delaney and O'Neil also reached double figures for the Jays, with 12 and 11 points, respectively.
Wright completed his third consecutive matchup with double-digit scoring. Hinckley recorded his second straight game in double figures for Dickinson, finishing with 13 points after going a perfect 6-6 from the foul line. Tierney wrapped up with eight on the afternoon, and classmate Will Colleran (Wayne, Pa./Valley Forge Military Academy) also had a strong showing, scoring six points in just 11 minutes on the floor.
Team stats were similar across the board with Dickinson shooting 38 percent from the floor and Hopkins slightly better at 40 on the night. The Red Devils made good on 25 percent of three-point attempts, and the Blue Jays connected on 24 percent from beyond the arc. Each team got 24 points of bench production. The Blue Jays won the rebound battle, 38-27, and benefited from 35 foul shots, sinking 22 from the stripe. The Red Devils shot well from the line, shooting 94 percent by dialing in on 15-of-16 attempts.
Dickinson moves to 3-6 overall and 3-2 in Centennial Conference play as Hopkins improves to 8-2 overall and 5-0 in CC action. Coach Seretti's Red Devils continue a two-game road stint on Thursday evening with a 7:00 pm matchup at Lancaster Bible College, before returning home for a non-conference matchup with Immaculata next Saturday, December 15th. Tip-off for the Red Devils final matchup in 2018 is scheduled for 3:00 pm at the Kline Center.
