(New Haven, Conn.) – The #27-ranked Dickinson men's squash team opened the 2016 College Squash Association National Team Championships with a decisive 8-1 victory over Bucknell University. The Red Devils, playing for the D-Division Conroy Cup, look to claim a top 25 team ranking to close out this season.
The Red Devils turned in a strong performance to begin play on Friday morning, claiming the top eight flights of the match, dropping just one set. First-year Abdelrahman Elsergany (Cairo Egypt/Kent School) survived a tough first set, 13-11, finishing strong with scores of 11-2 and 11-6 to claim the top flight.
Classmate Hal Holappa (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) surrendered just five points to win the third flight, posting 11-0 scores in the first and third sets (11-0, 11-5, 11-0). Cory Litman (Lower Merion, Pa./Lower Merion) dropped the second set, but dominated the other three (11-3, 11-1, 11-2) to earn the point in the four spot.
Andrew Strudwick (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest Academy) and Nicholas Struzenski (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley) won at five and six in straight sets. Harrison Mayo (Penn Valley, Pa./Harriton) won the seventh (11-1, 11-1, 11-4) and Vincent Warzecha (Chester Springs, Pa./Malvern Prep) swept the eighth flight (11-3, 11-5, 11-1).
The Red Devils move on to face #32-ranked Stanford University on Saturday afternoon at 2:00 pm. The Cardinal advanced to the semifinals with a 7-2 decision over MIT in its opening round match.
