Devils Overcome Slow Start to Top Hopkins in Overtime

Box Score

(Baltimore, Md.) – The Dickinson men's basketball team overcame a slow start at Johns Hopkins, but turned in a strong team performance to turn back the Blue Jays, 78-74, in overtime. The Devils improve to 3-0 in the Centennial Conference and 5-1 overall.

The Blue Jays jumped out to an early lead and stretched the margin to as many as 11 in the first half. The Blue Jays opened an 11-2 advantage, right out of the gates. They built a double-digit lead and went in front 26-15 at the midpoint of the first half.

The Red Devils clawed their way back into the game, behind 12 points from junior Adam Honig (Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greeley). Honig gave Dickinson its first lead of the day, knocking down a three-pointer after converting a tough shot in the paint on the previous possession with 2:23 remaining in the half.

Chris Cox (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hollows Hills West) added six points in the half, including a thundering dunk to ignite the Red Devil offense.

The Blue Jays extended the lead to 42-35 in the early minutes of the second half. The Devils answered with an 11-3 run as senior Chris Barsanti (Hummelstown, Pa./Tilton School) drained a three-pointer to put the Devils on top, 46-45, with 14:45 remaining in the game.

Hopkins briefly regained the lead before an 8-0 run gave Dickinson a seven-point edge at the 12:30 mark. Cox put the Devils up, 65-57, with 3:59 remaining in regulation, scoring off a nice assist from classmate Gerry Wixted (Moorestown, N.J./Lawrenceville School).

The Blue Jays weren't quite done, however, fighting back into it in the final minutes. Alex Pandragi scored and was fouled with 19 seconds to play, tying the game, 67-67. The Devils had one final attempt but it was just off the mark, sending the game into overtime.

Another quick start gave Hopkins a 72-68 advantage with just 1:56 to play in overtime. A pair of Landy free throws and a lay-up by first-year Ted Hinnenkamp (York, Pa./York Suburban) pulled the Devils even at 72-72.

Barsanti forced a critical Blue Jay turnover after Landy's free throw, causing a 10-second violation that would lead to Hinnenkamp's tying bucket. He closed out the game with a steal, rebound and four straight free throws in the final 15 seconds to secure the 78-74 win for the Devils.

Four Devils reached double-figures, led by Barsanti with a game-high 18 points, adding seven rebounds, two assists, a steal and a blocked shot. He went 10-for-10 from the stripe as Dickinson shot 82 percent for the game (27-33).

Honig tallied 16 points, hitting 4-of-5 free throws while Cox finished with 10. Wixted missed most of the second half with foul trouble but knocked-down 8-of-9 free throws for 12 points, adding seven rebounds, three assists to two blocked shots. Hinnenkamp was just shy but perfect with nine points, hitting 4-of-4 field-goals and his only free throw attempt. He tallied a game-high four steals as well.

George Bugarinovic led Hopkins (4-2, 2-1) with 16 points and nine rebounds while Pandragi finished with 15 points and five rebounds.

The Red Devils improve to 5-1 overall and 3-0 in the Centennial Conference. They return home to host Muhlenberg College on Wednesday night at 7:30 pm.
