(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson College men's basketball team played at a deliberate and modest pace, matching the half-court style of visiting Gettysburg on Wednesday night. The game plan paid-off in the end as the Red Devils outscored the visitors, 24-17, in the second half en route to a 44-38 win at the Kline Center.
Dickinson led in the early going before a Brendan Trelease three-pointer put the Bullets in front, 8-7, with 12:04 remaining in the first half. That triggered a 16-3 run for Gettysburg, stretching the margin to 21-10 at the five minute mark.
Sophomore guard Adam Honig (Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greeley) led the Devils on a run of their own, scoring seven points in the final 4:42 to cut the deficit to 21-20 at the break. Honig drained a three-pointer, hit two free throws and scored a breakaway lay-up at the buzzer. Junior Logan Furr (Sharon, Mass./Beaver Country Day) added a three-pointer in the run as well.
Gettysburg held a slim lead to start the second half, pulling in front, 25-20, with 16:52 on the clock. Furr knocked-down another triple to put the Devils up, 28-27, with 13:31 to play. Honig led another Devil run, scoring 5-of-7 as the Devils broke a tie to take the lead, 37-30, with just under six minutes remaining in regulation.
Gettysburg answered to pull within a possession but the Devils would hold on. Sophomore Tucker Landy (Durham, Conn./Xavier) closed out the game with an assist, blocked shot and hit 3-of-4 free throws in the final 2:20 of the game to help secure the win.
The Devils turned in another strong defensive performance, holding the Bullets (8-10, 5-6) to single-digits in the scoring column. Trelease led the way with eight points while Benjamin Constable added seven points and six rebounds. The Devils held Gettysburg to just 16 percent shooting in the second half as the Bullets hit just 3-for-19 after the break.
Honig finished with a game-high 17 points, hitting a trio of three-pointers and shooting 4-for-5 from the line. He dished out three assists and added a steal. First-year Gerry Wixted (Moorestown, N.J./Lawrenceville School) recorded a game-high 10 rebounds to go with eight points and three blocked shots. Furr tallied eight points as well, going 2-for-3 from beyond the arc.
The Red Devils improve to 9-9 overall and 6-5 in the Centennial Conference. They are home again on Saturday for another key conference match-up when Ursinus College comes to town for a 4:00 pm tip-off.
