(Baltimore, Md.) – The Dickinson College men's basketball team was deadly from the free throw line, capturing a key Centennial Conference road win at Johns Hopkins on Saturday afternoon. The Devils made a late run and held on for a 76-59 victory.
The Devils finished 32-for-39 from the free throw line, but at points during the game were 21-for-22 and 29-for-31. Dickinson was also dominant on the boards, out-rebounding the Blue Jays, 35-22, including 13 on the offensive end as well.
The Devils struck first but Hopkins answered and led for the majority of the first half. The Blue Jays used a 10-2 run to take their biggest lead of the game, 27-19, at the 5:42 mark of the first half. The Red Devils closed the gap, cutting the deficit to just a field-goal at the break, trailing 32-30.
The teams battled back-and-forth in the early minutes of the second half, playing to the sixth tie of the afternoon with 15:33 on the clock. The Devils went in front for good on an Adam Honig (Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greeley) three-pointer with 14:54 remaining in the game.
The Devils built the lead to double-figures, pulling in front 70-60, with 7:38 left to play. Hopkins rallied to cut the lead to five with just under six minutes to go, but would come no closer. The Devils continued to be red-hot from the free throw line. They hit 12-of-16 attempts in the final five minutes to secure the win.
First-year Gerry Wixted (Moorestown, N.J./Lawrenceville School) turned in another strong performance. He recorded his sixth double-double of the year, scoring a game-high 19 points while controlling a game-high 12 rebounds. Wixted went 9-for-10 from the line and grabbed six offensive rebounds.
Honig had another solid performance as well, scoring 16 points and handing out three assists. He went 5-of-10 shots from the floor and went 5-of-7 from the free throw line. Junior Chris Barsanti (Hummelstown, Pa./Tilton School) added nine points, four rebounds and four steals, hitting 5-of-6 from the charity stripe.
Senior Chris Heine (Spring Lake, N.J./St. Rose) knocked-down a pair of three-pointers, finishing with eight points while sophomore Tucker Landy (Durham, Conn./Xavier) tallied seven points. Greg Nicol (Aberdeen, Scotland/Taft School, Conn.) and Steve Collins (Rydal, Pa./LaSalle College) combined for 12 rebounds.
George Bugarinovic led the Blue Jays (10-6, 6-3 CC) with 12 points while Adam Spengler chipped in with 11 points and six assists.
The Red Devils improve to 8-9 overall and 5-5 in the Centennial Conference. They return home to host Gettysburg College on Wednesday at 8:00 pm.
